AAC Mural Unveiling at Union Terrace Elementary

Local artist and 2018 Allentown Arts Commission Artist-in-Residence Emerging Artist Grant Recipient Pedro LeDee will be unveiling his “Draw Your Own Path” mural at Union Terrace Elementary School, 1939 Union Street, Allentown on Thursday, November 15 beginning at 4:00pm during the dedication of this new installation.

LeDee is an alumnus of Union Terrace and has been working since late summer on the “Draw Your Own Path” project which will culminate on November 15 as current students from the school will put the finishing touch on the mural by applying painted hand prints to the wall. The dedication will be part of an extended Third Thursday, Allentown’s monthly celebration of the Arts.

Select guests attending the unveiling will include Mayor Ray O’Connell, Union Terrace Elementary Principal David Hahn; David Mickenberg, President & CEO of the Allentown Art Museum and Chair of the Allentown Arts Commission; and Norberto Dominguez, Chair of the Allentown Arts Commission New Initiatives Committee.

Artists of all genres including visual, music, theatre, dance, literary and digital were encouraged to submit a proposal to the Allentown Arts Commission between February and April of this year for projects to be completed by December 31, 2018. To be eligible for the grant, artists were required to live, work or study in Allentown.

The Allentown Arts Commission awarded $45,000 in grants to five recipients of the 2018 Artist-in-Residence Program. The program was established this year using funds from the City of Allentown’s Arts-based Economic Development budget. It was designed to artistically engage the community and create a bridge between the neighborhoods throughout the City of Allentown by fostering inclusiveness and celebrating diversity.

A thorough review of all proposals was made through a juried process including leaders of the Allentown artistic community representing residents, businesses, civic, educational and arts and cultural representatives under the leadership of Norberto Dominguez, Chair of the Allentown Arts Commission New Initiatives Committee. The recommendations of the jury were then voted upon and approved unanimously by the members of the Allentown Art Commission. The Allentown Arts Commission Artist-in-Residence program is managed by the Cultural Coalition of Allentown.
