Spraying for West Nile Virus

09/24/2018
Spraying for West Nile Virus

Mosquitoes capable of carrying West Nile virus will be under attack tonight in Allentown and South Whitehall Township.

A truck mounted spray application operation between 7:00pm and 11:00pm in the city will focus on Union and West End Cemetery and Sumner Avenue and the Industrial neighborhood adjacent to Coca Cola Park.

The application will also take place in and around Cedar Creek Park in South Whitehall.

Infected mosquitoes transmit the West Nile virus. These mosquitoes usually bite and infect wild birds -- the primary host of the virus -- but can also infect horses and other mammals, in addition to humans.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection works with representatives from all 67 counties on a comprehensive mosquito surveillance and control network. The Lehigh County coordinator is from Penn State Extension.

The spraying program was prompted by data the Extension has collected in the past two weeks regarding West Nile virus positive mosquito samples.

In the event of rain, the project will be postponed until Tuesday, September 25 or Wednesday, September 26.
