Joan Rivers launched her career as a comic in the early ‘60s, a time when female stand-ups were few and far between. This documentary, one of the most talked-about films of the summer, follows her through an eventful year in her life nearly 50 years after that start, and offers a look at the woman behind the laughter as she launches a one-woman show that doesn’t fare as well as she hopes, takes a chance as a participant on a reality TV show and ponders her career in show business at the age of 75.

Kate and Alex, married couple who run a successful business reselling estate-sale furniture, live in Manhattan with their teenage daughter Abby. Wanting to expand their two-bedroom apartment, they buy the unit next door, planning to knock the walls out. However, before doing so, they have to wait for the occupant, Andra, a cranky elderly woman, to die. The wait becomes complicated when the family develops relationships with Andra and her two grown granddaughters.
