Calluori Named Planning Director

Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski has appointed Shannon Calluori to the position of Director of Planning. Calluori succeeds Mike Hefele who retired Friday after serving 39 years with the city.

Calluori has been with the city since 2013 serving as Operations Manager for the Department of Community & Economic Development. She holds Masters Degrees in City Planning and Public Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. Before coming to Allentown, Calluori served as Director, Bureau of Public Health Preparedness in the Pennsylvania Department of Health and held management positions in the Philadelphia Health Department.

“DCED Director Sara Hailstone did not hesitate to recommend Shannon for the position immediately upon learning of Mike’s pending retirement,” said Pawlowski. “She already knows the issues facing the city and is obviously very qualified for the job. She is able to hit the ground running.”

Pawlowski said “Mike Hefele did a fantastic job. He has directed that bureau since 1981. He helped plan and then review developers’ plans for countless important projects in this city. There is no denying that it is hard to replace all that institutional knowledge. We are very grateful for his service and wish him the best in retirement.”

“I am thrilled to be provided this opportunity to lead the city Planning Bureau,” said Calluori. “I look forward to partnering with the community to build on Allentown’s recent successes and improve the living and working environment for residents and business owners.”

As DCED Operations Manager, Calluori has been responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the department, including managing cross departmental projects. She has also served as Acting Executive Director of the Allentown Redevelopment Authority.
