City Marks Recycling Anniversary

City Marks Recycling Anniversary

Today, April 22, is Earth Day, and it has a special meaning in Allentown. The city began its successful and award winning curbside recycling program on Earth Day 1990.

Over the last 26 years the Bureau of Recycling and Solid Waste has seen tremendous growth in our programs. This includes the expansion of materials collected in the residential curbside collection program and at the Allentown Recycling Drop-Off Center. The city continues to expand its public space recycling program to increase recycling on city sidewalks and in our parks and the bureau collects recycling and trash from more than 600 litter and recycling receptacles throughout the city.

Allentown has invested in the yard waste recycling program to process the yard waste and Christmas trees into mulch for use in city parks and for our residents.

Most recently, the bureau initiated an electronics recycling program for the free recycling of televisions, computers and other electronics for Allentown residents in response to state law banning these items from landfills. In 2015, 316,935 pounds of electronics were recycled.

The city is grateful for receiving grant funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to support these programs and initiatives.

The Bureau of Recycling and Solid Waste continues to be recognized by the Pennsylvania Waste Watchers program for its recycling, waste reduction, reuse, and composting programs.

The Bureau of Recycling and Solid Waste wishes everyone a Happy Earth Day and thanks the city’s residents and visitors for all they do to keep Allentown Clean & Green.
