Allentown School District’s newest high school – Building 21 Allentown – is accepting applications for incoming 9th graders for the 2017-2018 school year between February 6 – 28. The school will, once again, add approximately 150 incoming freshmen to its school roster next year. In addition, the high school is hosting an Open House on February 22 from 4:45 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. for interested students, parents, guardians, and families to learn more about Building 21 Allentown and tour the facility. The school is located at 265 Lehigh Street, Allentown.

All 8th grade students, residing within the Allentown School District boundaries, who are moving on to 9th grade are eligible to apply. There are no admission criteria, no fees, and no “screens” for selecting students. A lottery is used to determine the first 150 students with additional applicants placed on a waiting list.

Building 21 Allentown High School opened in September 2015. The school opened its doors to approximately 150 9th graders and has added that same number of incoming freshmen each year. The school offers a unique approach to the academic experience through a competency-based educational model that provides flexibility in how, what and where students learn. Students focus on project-based learning in core classes, use technology to master literacy and math skills and explore their own personal interests and passions both inside and outside the school. Students choose from a variety of instructional opportunities that include blended learning, project-based learning and experiential learning. Through external partnerships with higher education, businesses and community organizations, students are exposed to a wide array of academic and career-related fields.

Building 21 Allentown school day is 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. allowing for internship work in the community. The school is a partnership with Building 21, an educational non-profit organization based in Philadelphia that partners with school districts to develop high schools that allow students to learn at their own pace, engage with content and curriculum they find interesting, and develop skills in real-world environments.
