Many local properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the nation's official list of all cultural resources which are worthy of preservation. National Register listings ensure a property's preservation through a variety of methods. First, designation ensures the obvious recognition that a property is of significance. Second, National Register designation provides economic benefits, including eligibility for federal tax benefits and qualification for federal assistance in historic preservation as funds are available. The City maintains a continued effort to identify additional historic resources within the city. Some properties not on the National Register have been determined to be National Register eligible. Generally speaking, these properties are seen to be equally suitable for the Register, but an official application and other necessary paperwork have not been completed.
