Program Description:
The Nutrition and Physical Activity Program focuses on cardiovascular health, diabetes, nutrition, obesity prevention, osteoporosis and physical activity. The program provides cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure testing to City of Allentown residents. Participants with elevated cholesterol or glucose receive individual counseling by the Public Health Dietitian to help improve their diet.
The program also provides individual nutrition/life counseling and an after-school fitness class to overweight youth.
In addition to individual counseling, the program seeks to promote environmental, policy and systems changes that support healthy eating and increased physical activity in communities, schools, childcare centers and worksites.
Primary Services:
- Cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure screening for adults 18 years of age and older. Follow up nutrition counseling is conducted for individuals with elevated cholesterol and glucose levels.
- Nutrition counseling for overweight youth
- Fitness program for youth ages 8 - 14 every Tuesday from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM (excluding summer)
- Summer recreation program for children ages 7-13
- Community education - nutrition, physical activity, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and obesity
