Red E. Fox Education Program

The City of Allentown, Bureau of Communications, has recently implemented the 9-1-1 For Kids® educational program/curriculum. This program originated in the early 1990’s after a need for a standardized 9-1-1 curriculum was identified by the California Legislature.

The goal was to provide effective 9-1-1 educational materials targeting school aged children that would:

  • Deliver easy-to-remember messages about the proper use of 9-1-1
  • Hold their interest and have universal appeal to all children
  • Have guaranteed wide application
  • Have a long shelf life
Because of these goals, 9-1-1 For Kids® was created. The mission and purpose is to teach children how to save lives and property through the proper use of 9-1-1, the Nation’s universal emergency telephone number. Red E. Fox delivers this message and teaches us, When to use 9-1-1 and when not to, How to place a 9-1-1 call, and what to say to the dispatcher during a Police, Fire, or Medical emergency. Red E. Fox was created as a 9-1-1 Public Safety icon in the tradition of Smokey Bear and McGruff the Crime Dog.

Through a grant and funding provided by St Luke’s Hospital Network, the City of Allentown purchased the program materials and the Red E. Fox mascot costume in the spring of 2008. To date, the Red E. Fox program has been presented to numerous children’s groups, Civic groups, City Parades, and even a night out at the Iron Pigs Ball Park. It is estimated that our message reached more than 5,300 children specifically, and upwards of a few thousand during the larger scale events. Red E. Fox has logged more than 180 hours in presentations and programs.
